January 18, 2010 – It is heard all too often that our people do not gather enough anymore. So just before Christmas the staff at GMRC decided to hold a small gathering in January for the Elders in Listuguj.
It was an opportunity for Elders to get together and share stories, share laughter, and share knowledge. GMRC also took this time to pay tribute and honor to the Elders that agreed, last summer, to participate in videotaped discussions.
The day’s events were divided into two portions. The morning session was geared toward exchanging information and gathering feedback and direction on GMRC’s current and future projects. That evening, a moose meast feast was held in honor of our Elders and the special knowledge they possess.
Gji Geptin Andrew Denny was the guest speaker at the feast. Mr. Denny spoke of the importance of our Elders and the vital role they play in the Mi’gmaq Nation. “We’re hear to celebrate,” said Mr. Denny. He also added “It is so important for Elders in the community and the youth to gather, and talk”.
The day ended with the exchange of a few gifts and a few laughs. This gathering was one of many to come, where we as Mi’gmaq can get together and be Mi’gmaq.
