May 04, 2010 - Mi'gmaq leaders have met once again with Fisheries Ministers Shea to discuss strategies to cope with the loss of revenues that will affect entire Mi'gmaq communities.
Unlike commercial licenses held by non-native fishermen, licenses held by Mi'gmaq communities are communal in nature. This means all profits generated from the fishery help pay for community expenses in health, public works, post-secondary education, recreation, etc.
A technical committee has been assembled by the Atlantic Policy Congress to review information on the snow crab issue and to report back the Chiefs.
APC has sent a formal letter to Minister Shea regarding the ongoing snow crab issue. The Minister has committed to a response from the Department within three weeks.
