Snow crab quota reduction for Southern Gulf

April 07, 2010Fisheries and Oceans Canada has released the management plan for the 2010 snow crab fishery in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for this years quota has been set at 7,700 tons. It is estimated that a 63% reduction over last years catch will be realized for First Nations who operate under TAC.

The announcement by DFO still comes as a shock to GMRC as the reduction is even greater than had been expected. On March 17, in anticipation of this announcement, GMRC sent a letter to Minister Shea reminding her of the implications a significant quota reduction would have on Mi'gmaq and Maliseet communities.
