Tia’mugwet Youth Initiative 2009

August 31, 2009- As Mi’gmaq we have a special relationship with fish and wildlife. A relationship based on subsistence needs and values extending back thousands of years. Existing treaties acknowledge our right to fish, hunt, and gather.

One of the most important principles governing the Mi’gmaq relationship with hunting and fishing is “Netugulimg”. Netugulimg is the process of supplying onself or making a livelihood from the land, and “Netugulimgewel” refers to applicable rules or standards. It is through the use of “Netugulimgewel” that the Tia’mugwet (moose hunting) Youth Initiative is being proposed.

We wish to engage the youth by using the principles relating to Netugulimgewel in these key areas:
* Preserving, strengthening or renewing cultural and/or spiritual practices, beliefs and values associated with Netugulimg;

* Engage youth, resource users, and Elders in activities using Netugulimg, as well as, demonstrate methods for sharing traditional knowledge, practices and/or beliefs pertaining to appropriate harvesting, hunting, or fishing activities;

* Promote youth leadership and capacity to lead through integrated educational or mentoring programs using hunting related activities as a means of teaching; and,

* Increase access to and sharing of customs and beliefs through the use of Netugulimgewel, as a means of reviving and preserving our sacred link and covenant with Mother Earth.

We are currently accepting names of youth who would like to participate in this initiative. The hunt will take place on the weekends of September 12 & 13, and September 19 & 20. To submit your name for the hunt or for more information, please call (418) 788-3017 or email info@migmaqresource.org.
