Honoring Our Elders

January 18, 2010 – It is heard all too often that our people do not gather enough anymore. So just before Christmas the staff at GMRC decided to hold a small gathering in January for the Elders in Listuguj.

It was an opportunity for Elders to get together and share stories, share laughter, and share knowledge. GMRC also took this time to pay tribute and honor to the Elders that agreed, last summer, to participate in videotaped discussions.

Application for 2009 Short-Term Transitional Measures program for lobster license holders

The Short-Term Transitional Measures program will assist qualified low-income lobster license holders in Quebec and Atlantic Canada who have experienced financial hardship due to the global economic downturn of 2007-2009. Applicants can apply to the program until January 31, 2010.

First nation environmental organization garners national award

LISTUGUJ, QC – On October 8, 2009, the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers (CANDO) held the nationally recognized Economic Developer of the Year Awards at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Enoch, Alberta. The Award ceremony was held in conjunction with the CANDO 16th Annual Conference and General meeting.

Update on 2009 elver project

September 16, 2009 - As the summer has come to an end, so has our sampling on the juvenile American Eels (elvers). We are currently analyzing our results and also preparing to work on the final report. The title of the project is “Estimating Relative Abundance of Juvenile American Eel (Elvers) in Gespe’gewa’gi (present day Miramichi River, New Brunswick area to southern parts of Quebec’s Gaspe Peninsula)”.

August 31, 2009- As Mi’gmaq we have a special relationship with fish and wildlife. A relationship based on subsistence needs and values extending back thousands of years. Existing treaties acknowledge our right to fish, hunt, and gather.

GMRC welcomes new staff member!

August 18, 2009- GMRC is both pleased and honored to welcome Ann Gladue-Buffalo and her family to our community and organization. Ann has graciously accepted the challenging position of Chief Executive Assistant, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge from her previous employment to GMRC. Ann has travelled a great distance to be with us, a sacrifice that shows courage and commitment towards moving FN issues forward.

GMRC partners with hatchery to further Atlantic salmon conservation and restoration

April 06, 2009 (Listuguj, QC) - The Gespe'gewaq Mi'gmaq Resource Council (GMRC) and the Charlo Salmonid Enhancement Centre Inc. (CSEC) have announced today, that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that aims to strengthen their commitment on the preservation of the Atlantic salmon in the Restigouche region.

GMRC holds public session on Atlantic Salmon conservation

November 21, 2008, Listuguj – The Gespe’gewaq Mi’gmaq Resource Council (GMRC) held its first public information session and workshop on November 6 and 7 in Listuguj. The meetings were held to promote communications among agencies, groups and communities regarding Atlantic salmon conservation.

PLAMU/Salmon Sustainability Workshop

October 23, 2008- The Gespe'gewaq Mi'gmaq Resource Council is pleased to announce it will be hosting a workshop to promote the sustainability of the Restigouche River Atlantic Salmon.

Listuguj Shoreline Cleanup 2008

October 03, 2008- For the second year in a row, GMRC has sponsored a shoreline cleanup event in Listuguj, and for the second time, the grade 7 and 8 students from AGS come out in big numbers to help clean our shores.

During the event we able to remove approximately 15 large bags of garbage and other large items from our shore. In all the garbage removed was enough to fill the box of one of the public works trucks.
